Garnets are January’s Birthstone. Garnets can be found in many places around the world and have a wide range of colors such as clear, green, yellow, brownish and shades of red. There are six varieties of Garnets. The majority of specimens, Lumina mines, are from the Almandine variety. The Garnet in this specimen was found in Maine or New Hampshire. Garnets range in hardness on the Mohs hardness scale from 6.5 to 7.5. Garnet is said to have gotten its name from the Latin term for pomegranate.
